Cable TV vs. Streaming: Who's Winning?

With the introduction of streaming services such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, Apple TV, Sling TV, HBO NOW, SHOWTIME, BET NOW, Disney+, and more, cable TV has been losing customers faster than ever. However, is cable TV actually winning the streaming wars despite their lost customers?

Despite the multitude of streaming services, consumers still have to pay separately for all of them. Additionally, shows have been constantly dropped from one streaming service only to suddenly pop up on another. Film Daily claims that cable TV is the current winner of the streaming wars because it still provides a wider variety of options for viewers and fewer people are cutting the cord, although cable TV definitely less popular then it was 10 years ago. Why has cable TV declined over the past decade? This is mainly because of the benefits consumers get for purchasing the big three streaming services: Hulu, Netflix, and Amazon.

When subscribed to Hulu, consumers get next-day access to popular television series and original content such as The Handmaid's Tale and The Act. Their combination of subscription services and advertising keep its pricing low and their bundle with Disney+ makes adding the service a no-brainer for consumers looking for some nostalgia from their childhood. Finally, unlike Netflix and Amazon, Hulu has live TV with their service.

When subscribed to Amazon Prime Video, consumers get more than just access to the company's streaming service. Consumers also get free one-day shipping and discounts at Whole Foods. Additionally, Amazon Prime Video is basically free as the consumer's Amazon Prime subscription would be maintained with or without the Amazon Prime Video. Finally, Amazon Prime contains a massive amount of free content, licensed shows, and movies to keep viewers entertained for hours.

When subscribed to Netflix, consumers get some of the more popular TV shows such as The Office, Parks and Recreation, and The Bachelor while also introducing international content like Money Heist and The Untamed. Additionally, Netflix also releases original TV series and movies such as Stranger Things, Fuller House, Bird Box, and 13 Reasons Why. Netflix could arguably be considered as the king of streaming, as its presence resides in 200 countries.

However, when it comes to Cable, it has the one thing that none of the aforementioned streaming services can compete with, sports. There has yet to be a streaming service that offers a range of live sports, but even if there were any, traditional TV networks still hold all the rights to broadcast major U.S. sporting events. Many viewers haven't dropped their cable service to pick up streaming because of this. In fact, some viewers are even adding streaming services to their cable service.

Personally, over the past few years, all my brother and I have watched on TV were sports. With Apple TV, not only could you get all the popular streaming services on one device, but you could also watch sports broadcasted on a TV network's app. That's why my mom decided to drop cable and just use our phones, tablets, and Apple TV to watch or stream our favorite shows and sporting events.
